Naturalization Costs and Fee Waivers

As of April 1, 2024, the naturalization application fee is $710 for applicants who file online through the USCIS website or $760 for applicants who submit a paper application by mail. There is not a separate fee for biometrics.

Please note that the application fee is not refundable. If your application is denied, you will not get your money back.

Fee Options

You must file your citizenship application by mail to apply for a fee waiver or reduced fee request. You cannot do it online.

What if I can’t afford the filing fees?

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offers a fee waiver program and a reduced fee option to applicants who meet certain requirements. Use this calculator to find out if you are eligible for a waiver of the application fee or for the reduced fee.

Requesting a fee waiver

You can request a fee waiver if you, your spouse, or the head of household living with you currently receive a means-tested benefit; your household income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines; or you are currently experiencing financial hardship that prevents you from paying the filing fee, including unexpected medical bills or emergencies. Please visit our fee waiver calculator for more information.

You must file the form I-912, Request for Fee Waiver, with your paper N-400 application. If your request is approved, you don’t need to pay the government any filing fees.

Requesting a reduced filing fee

If you submit your application before March 31, 2024: You may qualify for a reduced filing fee if your income is greater than 150% but not more than 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines when you file. With this reduction, the cost is $320 for the filing fee plus the biometrics service ($85), for a total of $405. Please visit our fee waiver calculator for more information.

Remember: If you qualify for a reduced filing fee, you must still pay the full biometric services fee along with the reduced fee and submit the form I-942, Request for Reduced Fee.

If you submit your application on or after April 1, 2024: You may qualify for a reduced filing fee if your income is greater than 150% but not more than 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines when you file. With this reduction, the cost is $380 for the filing fee. There is no separate fee for biometrics. If you qualify and would like to pay the reduced filing fee, you must file your N-400 on paper and provide the required documentation.
